Need A Ride?

I made a day trip to SuZhou while I was in Shanghai. We went to one of the gazillion gardens. Some members of my party got seperated when we exited the gardens. So while we waited for them, I took some shots of the surrounding area. It was a small street but there was a lot of activity. I guess this is one of the tourist places so there were several pedicabs hanging around. It was a sunny sunny day.

Portrait #1

This man is my grandmother's (mother's side) younger step-sister's eldest son. I'm not sure what that makes us. I met him for the first time when I went to ZhongShan a few weeks ago. The trip was an experience of a lifetime because ZhongShan is where both my parents were originally from. I grew up hearing this other dialect (ZhongShan dialect) in our house and I always knew we were from ZhongShan. Now I finally had a chance to visit.

To make the trip more meaningful, I went with my grandmother. My grandmother's other younger step-sister (not the mother of the man in the portrait), and my two aunts (my grandmother's daughters) also came. It was an exhausting day and we only really spent 3hours total at our destination in ZhongShan but it was great. My grandmother had not seen her sister in ZhongShan for over 40 years and to be honest, this is probably the last time that they will see each other as well since they are both very old.

We were greeted with the warmest and friendliest welcome by my grandaunt and her branch of the family. Lunch was a feast. I spent the rest of the time just watching everyone talk while taking photos. I took many photos of this man because he was so friendly looking and I felt very comfortable around him for some reason. Maybe it's because he reminds me of my dad. A tall thin man whom you can tell has smiled for much of his life by the wrinkles on his face. He's not smiling in this photo but I liked this one.

Too Tired For Titles

I liked the colors and patterns in this photo. That's about it. Maybe I overdid the depth of field.

Too tired to write about the picture. 30+hrs without sleep. TAKE THAT JETLAG! Bedtime for baby.

An Altercation

This photo was taken on the streets of Old Town near the YuYuan Gardens in Shanghai.

A large crowd had gathered to watch a dispute between the police and who appears to be a street vendor (the woman). However, when I was watching, it appeared that the custodial worker (the man in the middle) was doing most of the talking to the police. I didn't stick around long because I'm sure the police would not have liked me taking photos of the situation.

I learned this toning technique from David Nightingale at Chromasia.com. He used it on some photos of china and i really liked the effect.

Please Mind The Gap

I took this photo while waiting for the KCR (Kowloon-Canton Rail) at the ShaTin stop in Hong Kong. I was staying in ShaTin in the New Territories with my Uncle while visiting Hong Kong. The KCR is one of the main methods of transportation from ShaTin into Kowloon and Hong Kong Island.

For those of you who can't read chinese, the words on the ground in front of the man say "Please Mind The Gap." Well at least that's what the announcement says. I always thought it was a strange way to phrase it. Basically they are warning passengers about the gap between the platform ledge and the rail car.
